A failing water heater rarely goes quietly. Prosper’s combination of heavy household demand and hard water leads to several distinct warning signs.

No Hot Water

If your water comes out freezing cold, the underlying cause depends on your equipment type:

• Gas Units: Faulty thermocouple, failed electronic ignition, extinguished pilot light, or defective gas control valve.

• Electric Units: Tripped high-limit switch, burned-out upper or lower heating element, or blown thermostat.

• Tankless Units: Ignition failure, clogged flame sensor, gas supply line restriction, or electrical board fault.

Not Enough Hot Water

If your shower turns lukewarm after five minutes, your system is losing capacity. This typically stems from a failed lower heating element on electric units, a broken dip tube directing cold water to the top of the tank, or thick mineral sediment occupying space inside the unit.

Popping, Rumbling, or Creaking Noises

When calcium and magnesium settle at the bottom of a water heater, they form a hardened layer of scale. Water trapped beneath this mineral layer boils and bubbles up, creating loud popping or rumbling sounds every time the burner fires.

Water Heater Leaks

Not every puddle means you need a brand-new tank:

• Repairable Leaks: Loose drain valves, leaking flex lines, faulty temperature & pressure (T&P) relief valves, or worn expansion tank fittings.

• Non-Repairable Leaks: Fractures or rust-through holes in the inner tank lining itself.

Rusty or Discolored Hot Water

If brownish or reddish water comes out only when you turn on hot water, your tank’s sacrificial anode rod may be fully depleted, allowing internal tank steel to rust.
