Heating Installation in Dallas, TX

Choosing the Right Heating System for Your Dallas Home

Dallas homes need heating that handles two challenges: long stretches of mild weather where the system barely runs, and sudden cold snaps that demand full output. The right system choice depends on your home’s size, insulation, existing ductwork, and how you use natural gas vs. electricity.

Gas Furnaces

The default choice for most Dallas homes. Atmos Energy supplies natural gas throughout the metro area, and most existing homes are already plumbed for gas. Modern gas furnaces range from 80% to 98% AFUE. For Dallas, we typically recommend 90-95% AFUE as the best balance of cost and efficiency. A 98% AFUE unit costs more upfront and the annual gas savings over a 95% unit are modest in a climate where heating demand is concentrated in just a few months.

Heat Pumps

Heat pumps are gaining ground in Dallas because the mild winter climate falls within their efficient operating range for most of the season. A heat pump eliminates the need for a separate furnace and AC. The tradeoff: during the 20-25 nights per year when Dallas drops below freezing, auxiliary electric heat kicks in at higher operating cost. For details, see our heat pump services page.

Dual Fuel Systems

A dual fuel system pairs a heat pump with a gas furnace. The heat pump handles heating above 35-40 degrees (cheaper than gas at mild temperatures), and the furnace takes over during hard freezes (cheaper than electric resistance heat at low temperatures). This is the most efficient option for Dallas but has a higher installation cost.

What Heating Installation Costs in Dallas

All prices include equipment, labor, permit, and startup testing. The final cost for your home depends on system size (determined by a Manual J load calculation), ductwork condition, gas line and electrical requirements, and the efficiency level you select.

How Installation Works

Step 1: Home Evaluation

We inspect your home's layout, measure square footage, check insulation levels, assess ductwork condition, and perform a Manual J load calculation. This determines the correct system size in BTUs. Skipping this step leads to oversized systems that short-cycle or undersized systems that cannot maintain temperature.

Step 2: Equipment Selection

Based on the load calculation, we present 2-3 options at different efficiency and price levels. You receive a written estimate for each option.

Step 3: Permit

We pull the mechanical permit from the City of Dallas. All heating installations in Dallas require a permit and pass inspection. As a TDLR-licensed contractor, we handle this process.

Step 4: Installation Day

Most residential installations complete in one day. We remove old equipment, position the new system, connect gas and electrical, install the flue, and integrate with your thermostat. We protect your floors and clean up when finished.

Step 5: Testing and Handoff

We run the system through a complete heating cycle, measure combustion readings, verify airflow at each register, and test all safety controls. We walk you through the new system's operation and register your manufacturer warranty.

Dallas Neighborhoods We Serve

Lakewood and East Dallas

Older Lakewood homes built in the 1940s-1960s often need ductwork assessment during installation. Original sheet metal ducts may be undersized for modern high-efficiency equipment. We evaluate the ductwork during the home assessment and include any necessary modifications in the estimate.

Preston Hollow

Larger Preston Hollow properties often require multi-zone installations or higher-capacity equipment. We design the system layout during the evaluation to ensure even heating across all areas, including additions or converted spaces that may not have been part of the original floor plan.

Lake Highlands and North Dallas

Lake Highlands homes from the 1960s-1970s frequently have furnaces in tight utility closets. Equipment selection for these installations prioritizes compact footprint. We measure the available space during evaluation and select units that fit without requiring structural modifications.

We also serve Carrollton, Addison, Richardson, Plano, and the broader DFW metro. Wherever your home is, Oncor handles the electrical delivery and Atmos Energy supplies the gas.

Why Choose Harlen Johnson HVAC, Plumbing & Electrical for Installation

Frequently Asked Questions

Most residential installations complete in one day. Projects requiring ductwork modifications, gas line changes, or complex venting may take two days. We confirm the timeline in your written estimate.

Yes. All new heating system installations require a mechanical permit from the City of Dallas and must pass inspection. We handle the permitting process as part of the installation.

System size is determined by a Manual J load calculation that accounts for your home's square footage, insulation, windows, ceiling height, and orientation. We perform this calculation during the home evaluation. A 2,000 square foot home in Lakewood with original 1950s insulation needs a different size than a 2,000 square foot home in a newer North Dallas development.

Yes. If your home has existing ductwork and sufficient electrical capacity, switching to a heat pump is straightforward. If electrical panel upgrades are needed, we coordinate that work. A heat pump handles both heating and cooling, so you may be able to replace both your furnace and AC with one system.

We install American Standard, Ameristar, Carrier, and Lennox. We recommend equipment based on your home's needs and budget, not brand incentives.
